Granada debuts as a new official venue in an epic stage marked by the toughness and spectacular nature of the course. For the first time, both the start and finish of this 15th edition of the Andalucía Bike Race by GARMIN took place in the city.
With a demanding 62.97-kilometer route and 1,816 meters of elevation gain, riders passed through stunning cityscapes, including the Paseo de los Tristes with the majestic Alhambra in the background, the Albaicín neighborhood, the Sacromonte trail, the Alto de las Tres Torres, and the Beas de Granada quarries. They also passed through the towns of Quéntar and Dúdar before facing the final kilometers through Los Muñoces and the triumphant ride along the Fuente de la Bicha trail before reaching the finish line.
The excitement lasted until the very last meter, with fierce competition between the top three men’s pairs. Italians Jakob Dorigoni and Gioele De Cosmo from Torpado Kenda FSA 2, current overall leaders, made the difference while crossing the Genil River on their way to the Paseo del Salón. They cut through the middle of the river, gaining the few seconds needed to claim the first stage win. Just seconds behind were Granada’s own David Valero and Tiago Ferreira from BH Coloma Team, followed closely by Jakob Hartmann and Andreas Seewald from Singer KTM Racing, finishing in a heart-stopping sprint. The tiny gaps between these three pairs highlight the fierce competitiveness of this edition.
“We’re very happy to start the week with a win. We’re strong sprinters, and that helped us at the end of a very even stage with the other two pairs,” said the Italian winners.
In the women’s category, winners Mónica Calderón and Tessa Kortekaas from Cannondale ISB Women showed their experience and teamwork from the start. They stayed close to Claudia Peretti and Meritxell Figueras from Cannondale Protour Olympia until they managed to open up a one-minute gap to secure Stage 1 victory.
“We knew our strengths and played our cards well. The course was demanding but also a lot of fun,” said the female winners after crossing the finish line.
In third place were Katazina Sosna and Irina Lützelschwab from Torpado Kenda FSA/Bulls. The first leaders of this fifteenth edition said:
“We had some questions about our physical condition, but we felt good throughout the stage, managed the effort well, and finished strong to take the stage win.”
Tomorrow’s stage will start from the Complejo de la Bola de Oro in Granada. Riders will face a short, fast, and technical 26.17-kilometer course with 741 meters of elevation gain. Despite being shorter, it promises to be intense, with the challenge of overcoming the final stage in the province of Granada. Given the competitiveness shown in today’s opening stage, an intense battle for the lead is expected all the way to Córdoba next Saturday.
