A big day in Cordoba with the celebration of the queen stage, the Skoda Super Stage, with 88.66 kilometres and 1,828 metres, the longest stage of the Andalucía Bike Race.
The stage, with a spectacular start at the Roman bridge in Cordoba, was anticipated as the last great opportunity to reduce distances in the general classification of the men's category before the explosive time trial next Sunday. The Finisher Stage can be followed live on the Andalucía Bike Race Youtube channel from 10.30am.
As expected, the pace of the race has been frenetic. Wout Alleman and Hans Becking of Buff Megamo took the initiative in the group of favourites to impose a selective pace. The strategy proved successful for the Buff Megamo boys, as Andreas Seewald and Marc Stutzmann, second in the general classification, dropped off in the first kilometres of the course.
The Spaniards from Klimatiza Toteemi Cabberty, Roberto Bou and Miguel Muñoz, kept pace with the favourites.
Holding off the challenge of Alleman and Becking were leaders Fabian Rabensteiner and Samuele Porro (Wilier-Vittoria), as well as the combative Diego Rosa and Casey South (Torpado Kenda Factory), who joined the pace set by the Buff Megamo boys. Behind them, Seewald and Stutzmann, facing the threat of losing second place in the overall standings, struggled to get closer to the race leader but failed to connect.
At the finish line, located in the charming park of La Asomadilla in the Cordovan capital, the question was whether Wout Alleman and Hans Becking would be able to capitalise on the effort made in the Super Stage to improve their times in the general classification.
Finally, in the last corner before the finish line, the two most in-form pairs of the Andalucía Bike Race emerged. The Skoda Super Stage was defined in a head-to-head duel between Alleman and Becking against Rabensteiner and Porro.
The Buff Megamo riders won over the Wilier-Vittoria riders, taking their third victory in this edition of the Andalucía Bike Race. Diego Rosa and Casey South of Torpado Kenda Factory crossed the finish line in third place. Andreas Seewald and Marc Stutzmann of the Canyon Sidi MTB Team hold on to second place overall by just 3 seconds.
Wout Alleman commented at the finish: "We knew it would be crucial to position ourselves at the front. Then Hans pushed really hard and we accelerated to the maximum. We had a lot of fun on this last part, but we also suffered a lot, which turned out to be the key to winning this stage".
In the women's category, the leading riders rode in a group until halfway through the stage, in this group rode the illustrious names of this edition; Wüst and Van Doorn, Figueras and Peretti, Calderón and Kortekaas, Luetzelschwab and Fischer and Njemčević and Andersson.
It was the Allebike Team girls, Njemčević and Andersson, who were the first to break away from the convoy of favourites. Halfway through the stage, Buff Megamo's Janina Wüst and Rosa Van Doorn went into cannibal mode and gave their rivals no chance.
The Swiss and the Dutchwoman have won for the fourth consecutive day and, unless there is a major surprise tomorrow, they should secure the first place on the podium in Cordoba.
In second place came Cannondale ISB's Txell Figueras and Claudia Peretti. Irina Luetzelschwab and Natalia Fischer, consolidating a brilliant final stretch of the race, reached the third position.
Wüst and Van Doorn expressed their concerns about tomorrow's final round: "We are nervous. We need to have that feeling before the race. We think we have a good lead, but even in a short time trial anything can happen. So we need to keep our concentration and control ourselves, without making mistakes".
